Somedays are just hard being 3!

Day 16 - September 25th - Our 25th and 26th visits were ok. Today she liked being three again. I just feel sorry for the sweet little girl. Her world is just getting turned upside down and she doesn’t know how to deal with it really. It is hard to tell her that we need her as much as she needs us. Veeka and Caleb did enjoy the first half of our time together. They jumped and jumped together. It was so cute them being together. It has been overcast all day and even started raining during our second visit, so we didn’t get to play outside for the whole day. By the time we left our afternoon visit, Veeka was in a much better mood and just was giggling. That is always a good note to leave on. Then we walked back in a light rain.

Today during our break between visits, we enjoyed a great pizza (different girls made this one; it was amazing), went to the internet cafй, and came back to the hotel and 66% of us did our homework. Caleb also enjoyed the little bubble gun that we bought. He shot bubbles off the balcony and enjoyed every moment of it.

Because we walk almost 1 and a half hours everyday, we thought we would share a little bit about what we see. (This is a picture of the front of our hotel.) From our hotel we walk about 300 meters, which is mostly uphill, to the first big street (because I cannot tell you street names, we are going to go with “first big street” and so on; pretty clever, huh?). These 300 meters is more on a residential type road consisting of houses all along the left side, a driver’s ed. type place with a driving course on a huge parking lot, and then an elementary school. The school is on the corner of the residential street and the first big street. Look at the picture named “school.” At the school we turn left and walk along the first big street. We walk along this road maybe 100 meters. I don’t really know what is along the right side, but the left mostly consists of small vendors selling their products. There is lady who buys glass bottles, another lady who sells a variety of school supplies, a lady who sells produce, some other people who sell anything from alcohol, cigarettes, hot dogs, ramen noodles, deodorant, water, candy, etc. Pretty much anything you can think of (within reason) can be found on this street.

The first big street dead ends into the second big street, where we cross and then turn left. This is a picture of Papa and Caleb waiting to cross the street. Instead of walking up next to the road we go down a few stairs next to an apartment building. Walking a little ways from the street, really keeps us from ingesting the dirt from the cars and buses. We walk along the second big street for probably 200 meters (this is where the internet place is) and then turn right at the third big street. This street consists of mostly businesses that we walk by. We walk down this street for about 400 meters. On this street, there are lots of “chestnut” trees, not the chestnuts you eat. The chestnuts are falling like crazy right now, and if you don’t watch it, you will get bonked in the head with one. (Today, one bounced off the street and hit me in the chin.) Caleb loves to kick them! We even have a few in our room that he has picked up for fun. Also on this street, we go up and down lots of stairs, maybe four sets of stairs, consisting of 5 to 10 steps each. We turn right one last time onto a smaller street. This is the street that the baby home is on. It is probably 50 meters from the corner of the third big street. On this final street, we walk by a little construction site and then we come to the fence line of the baby home. Yeah we made it! Aren’t you exhausted just thinking about it? (I hope it make sense?!?!)

This is a picture of Veeka's baby home.

Wow - that is a lot of walking. I am tired just reading it....At least you're not having to worry about missing your workouts this month. And isn't Caleb quite the trooper for doing this, too (although it sounds like there aren't too many choices). So glad it's all coming together.

Hi Heather Monty and Caleb - You may have tried this already with straw - it will teach her it's use. Try the trick of putting your finger over the end = gather up juice - then release it in her mouth a few times then gradually if you don't move your finger she'll suck on it and bingo it should work - someone showed me this works with babies! Love the story with pictures and streets this is how I need directions given. I know your mountain hike benefits your daily treks in the Ukraine. love to all
